I purchased this bike, set up at that time with 1992 Shimano components, at Steve Lansky's Cycle Cellar (now disbanded) in Ann Arbor, and have been its only owner and rider since then.
I have up-graded the components a number of times, with the final current configuration as above. I have maintained it in excellent condition, never (thankfully) any crashes nor damage.
Regarding the "triple chainring capable": It is currently set up as a standard 10-speed, 40/50 double. But the crank/spider is Campy Racing Record Triple from 2006, and I rode it as the 30/40/50 triple from 2006 through 2009 (several mountain rides, etc). The rear derailleur is Chorus rather than Record as that was the only Campy rear der at that time that would accommodate a 30T to 50T wrap. In 2009 I bought a new carbon fiber aero bike to try to offset my aging physiology (!) and moved the Merlin to my indoor trainer. At that time I converted it to the 40/50 double by removing the 30T chainring and replacing the offset crank axle necessary for a triple with the symmetric Campy axle (and new BB bearings) for the double. It rides, pedals, shifts normally in this configuration. However, there is no reason why it could not be reconverted to the triple if desired by a new owner. I still have the asymmetric axle. However I cannot find the 30T ring, so that would need to be obtained by new owner if desired (these appear to be available o the internet).
