Why Gravel Roads Take Time to Grade in Washtenaw County
For people who live on gravel roads in Washtenaw County, spring road conditions are part of daily life.
They are the potholes on the way to work, the ruts that slow the school bus, the muddy stretches after a hard rain and the dust that comes later when the road finally dries out.
But fixing those roads is not as simple as sending out a grader every time a complaint comes in, according to the Washtenaw County Road Commission.
Tiffany Oliphant, communications manager for the road commission, said spring is one of the hardest times of year for gravel road maintenance.
“Weather is not our friend,” Oliphant said.
